University Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate the ability to complete highly competitive college-level work.

Appalachian is committed to promoting access to higher education for students who come from families of limited means. As part of that effort, the Academic Promise Scholarship provides financial support for Appalachian freshmen whose high school record predicts success in college but whose financial need is not fully met by state and federal financial aid. Scholarship recipients are determined in April of the year the student will begin at Appalachian and potential recipients are screened based on their acceptance to the university and the federal and state aid that has been provided in their financial aid package. Priority for the Academic Promise Scholarship is given to students who meet these criteria and who will be the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college or university. This scholarship is renewable with a 3.25 cumulative GPA. |

Alumni Memorial Scholarships are available to the sons and daughters of Appalachian graduates. The scholarship is a minimum of $2,000 and is renewable contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (a 3.0 GPA) and based on funds available. This scholarship opportunity was founded and is funded by donor contributions and the proceeds of the Appalachian license tag program. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic success in high school, SAT or ACT scores, participation in school and community activities (including work experience) and leadership potential.

The Chancellor's Scholarships, administered by the Heltzer Honors Program, are highly competitive awards available only to incoming freshmen on the basis of high school achievement, learning aptitude, and a commitment to the active and involved learning promoted in the Heltzer Honors Program. This scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years, provided the student maintains a 3.4 grade point average and funding is available. This scholarship entitles recipients to priority housing in the honors residence hall. Each recipient is required to take at least one honors course each semester during the first two years. The selection committee considers all parts of the student's application, including the high school transcript, with emphasis on the quality of the student's SAT/ACT essay.

Available to freshmen and transfer students who plan to major in one of the sixteen departments of the College of Arts and Sciences including Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Geography and Planning, Geology, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematical Sciences, Philosophy and Religion, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science/Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Sociology/Social Work. The committee considers scholastic aptitude, maturity, and quality of character which project a high probability of academic excellence. Continued eligibility is dependent upon available funds and requires that the student maintain a grade point average of 3.25 and major in one of the departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. At the end of each academic year, scholarship recipients are required to submit a statement of his/her academic plans for the following year. |

As part of the University's effort to create a more diverse student body, diversity scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate and value academic achievement, exhibit strong leadership potential, and eagerly identify ways to implement positive change. Although, priority is given to students from under-represented groups, students from all ethnic backgrounds who can contribute diversity to campus are considered for this award. Admitted Freshman should have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Other criteria include: academic achievement as demonstrated by grades and SAT or ACT scores; personal background, as demonstrated by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, educational experience, socioeconomic background, cultural heritage, race and ethnicity, and geographic origin; and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by extracurricular activities, community service and work experience. This scholarship is renewable contingent upon academic success as determined by the committee. Other factors such as courses taken, citizenship and involvement in a multicultural student organization may also be considered when determining renewals. |

A maximum of fifteen (15) New River Light and Power Scholarships are available for current high school seniors only of Watauga County. The top five (5) applicants will be awarded scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each. The ten remaining scholarships will be awarded having a value of $1,000 each. The scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the scholarship committee. The New River Light and Power Scholarships are available for eight consecutive semesters or four years of undergraduate work. All recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA at the end of each academic year in order to retain the scholarship. Applicants must plan to major in a field of teacher education, pursue a bachelor of science degree with teacher licensure, and commit to a career in teaching. The committee considers factors such as scholastic merit, commitment to teaching, potential to become an effective teacher, and demonstrated leadership. The average SAT is approximately 1275 and grade point average range is 4.06 - 4.82. Students are usually ranked in the upper 15 percent of their class. Scholarships are awarded for four years provided the recipient maintains a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, continues a major in a field of education, and demonstrates a commitment to teaching. |

This scholarship program, established in honor of Appalachian's former president, Dr. William Howard Plemmons, is awarded to students who demonstrate successful academic achievement with active involvement in high school or community activities. Students accepted into the Plemmons Leader Fellows Program will have the opportunity to participate in a leadership development program which includes selected courses, workshops, clubs and organizational involvement, and other related leadership experiences. Students in the program will be expected to fulfill established requirements and meet prescribed academic achievement standards. Applicants should have a 3.0 high school grade point average or 1000 on their SAT(math and reading) along with significant involvement in their high school or community. The scholarship committee considers academic performance, history of involvement and leadership, and potential for contributions to the University and Boone community through involvement and participation in a leadership. |
